SUMMARY

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion: Weaving an Inclusive Culture in the Workplace

This session equips participants with the practical skills they need to lead their teams and build a culture where diversity, equity, and inclusion can thrive. Inclusive work environments can yield greater creative output, and boost employee morale. Participants will also identify some “best practices” in navigating cultural diversity in a workplace setting, and build skills to minimize the effects of their biases on others, and communicate more effectively.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Identify and discuss the foundational concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Gain practical strategies for engaging diversity and difference in practice
  • Examine the role of leadership in creating and sustaining workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion


ABOUT OUR SPEAKER

María Teresa Bustamante | She, Her, Ella
Educator and Staff Education Specialist II
University of New Mexico Hospital

Maria T. Bustamante works in the department of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) where she develops and conducts organization-wide training to foster a culture of understanding and a climate of equity and inclusion among patients, staff, visitors, and the communities that we serve. Through teaching, discovery, and advocacy, she promotes equity in access to quality care, which supports the core values and Behaviors of Excellence of UNMH.  She took on this role in 2020 bringing with her 20 years of experience in a non-profit setting working with diverse communities. Within her non-profit experience, she served as an educator, legal advocate, resident advisor, communications/marketing coordinator, and community organizer.  María received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of New Mexico with a double major in Spanish and Journalism & Mass Communications.
